It's buggy and incomplete and I wouldn't recommend ever relying on it. I was surprised when Resolve started to introduce MKV support in version 18, but there it is.
It was for the same reason - those were end user files that no one should ever want to edit. Back in the day, people used to wonder why Vegas wouldn't open FLV files. No camera outputs MKV files, no editing software uses it as an intermediate or editing format, so there's no good reason for any editing software to ever be able to open an MKV file. But quite honestly, there is no need for DaVinci to support MKV.
MKV support in DaVinci is new and patchy and there's some MKV files it's just not going to like.
